Northern
Saw-whet Owls: A Fall Migration Study
Kelly
Williams-Sieg,
Ohio
University
|
|
This journey began studying the migration of Northern Saw-whet Owls at
Buzzard's Roost Nature Preserve in
Ross
County
with a pilot project in November of 2003. Since then, we have captured
and released 120 Saw-whet owls. Our goals include defining migration
timing; stop over patterns, and migration patterns of Saw-whet owls,
as well as educating the public about
Ohio
's tiniest owls.
Kelly is a certified bird bander through the North American Banding
Council and has a Federal Master Banding Permit and State of Ohio
banding Permit. She is currently the Vice President of the Ohio Bird
Banding Association, an active member of the Scioto Valley Bird and
Nature Club, and working on her MS degree in Environmental Studies at
Ohio
University
. Research interests include migration of Northern Saw-whet Owls,
productivity and survivorship of breeding birds, and avian foraging
behavior.

A
Birding Adventure in
Costa Rica
Hardy
Eshbaugh and Jim Reid,
Audubon
Miami
Valley
Chapter Members
|
|
In January 2007 sixteen
Oxford
residents including many Audubon Miami Valley Chapter members made a
memorable birding trip to
Costa Rica
with Elderhostel. In addition to seeing many interesting birds we
visited five unique habits and learned a lot about community based
conservation efforts in
Costa Rica
. We want to share this
experience with Audubon Miami Valley Chapter members as well as
discuss other possible opportunities for Chapter members to make
another significant birding trip to
Latin America.
Hardy
Eshbaugh is a Professor Emeritus of Botany at
Miami
University
. He has led numerous natural history trips emphasizing birding
throughout the world. Jim Reid is Director of the Miami University
Natural Areas and has organized several birding trips to Crane Creek
and northern
Michigan
.
Both are enthusiastic birders and ardent conservationists.
